Thaba Nchu’s favourite son, Dr Tshepo Kukuni has published his second book titled “The Laymen Perspective on Innovation and The Adoration of Politics by South African Youth”.

The book is co-authored by Kutlo Tlatli, Joe Benganga and Maneo Moloadi.

The book discusses at the interconnectivity between politics and education in the perspective of a layman and experiences by the author and the book`s contributors.

Based on the experiences of the author as a layman in the political arena but an expert in innovation, the author through social interaction with different communities and experts formulated a so-called “mini and informal conversation” with the youth of different townships were all their responses were contrived to open discussions around the choices the youth would primarily take. As a matter of fact, the mini-discussions conducted in this book does not in any way represent any scientific evidence but rather the opinions of the communities.

This book thus presents the opinions both of the authors and of the interacted communities based on layman perspective and the analysis on howt he youths from townships would rather choose to be politicians “uneducated” politicians as opposed to enduring ¾ years in a higher education setup.

However, noting that this statement from the discussion does not mean that these youths’ loath education but rather the effects of the socio-economic impact direct them to this point. In most of the conversations it was seen that poverty and lack of educational role models contributes significantly to this thinking approach.

Hence it is so empirical for both government and other stakeholders to recognize outstanding individuals both academically and otherwise whom their impact is felt within the communities at a large scale. Primarily the most exceptional awards should be funded and implemented at a large scale to motivate the youths; not limited to the renaming of streets, buildings etc. to enhance healthy competition that will take communities forward and reduce hunger and unemployment through education and knowledge economy.

The book comprises of five chapters where the first chapter speaks to the overall perspective of the authors based on their own experiences and informal discussion they have had with communities. Furthermore, in chapter 2, the authors look at the coherence of politics and innovation. How interconnected are the two? Would the introduction of minimum qualifications and experience bring about change in the political landscape? Let us note that in this book, education and innovation are used interchangeably for their use in this book resembles the same ideology.

In Chapter 3, the authors now examine the youth view and practices towards innovation. How the youth cherish and dislike innovation and do they see innovation as a threat, or we can say view education as long way to achieve success while there are shortcuts such as political career.

Based on the authors perspectives, the youth views are analysed in the context of the youth being the future of the country primarily as leaders. The primary focus of this chapter is to gather information and understand if the youth do or do not value education, and then what kind of future leaders will this country have and how then the authors from their different backgrounds can change the perspectives of the communities whom do see innovation as a threat for the betterment of this wonderful and rich country.

Chapter 4 looks at the performance evaluation procedures and fairness in government institutional setup. This chapter based on the administrative experience of the co-contributors checks their factual opinions on the performance evaluation model in government institutions.

These opinions does not in any way assume that the perspective here is scientifically correct but is based on the opinion and experience of the authors both inside and outside government institutions.

This book concludes in chapter 5 where the authors and co-contributors provide both technical and non-technical sound solutions to aid the readers of this book and mostly the youth to make informed and impactful life decision that would aid this country to achieve more and reduce poverty through the use of education as a catalytic tool to achieve that.

The book is available at R200 and can be ordered from the author at 0714571911 or facebook @tshepo kukuni
