Matlwangtlwang in Steynsrus is grappling with turmoil as a truck en route from Klerksdorp to Harrismith, was engulfed in flames during last night’s power outage.
The R76 road connecting Kroonstad to Steynsrus is reportedly closed due to a protest in Steynsrus, fuelled by allegations of unfair employment practices by the Moqhaka Local Municipality.
The torching of the truck allegedly happened around 8pm (20:00) on Wednesday 14 February during loadshedding, raising concerns about safety and order in the community.
Sources say the truck driver, who was en route to report the road closure at the police station, found himself at the epicenter of the escalating tension.
The ongoing strike revolves around claims of unfair hiring practices by the Moqhaka Municipality. Protestors allegedly demand that those hired unfairly to stop going to work and for fairness to prevail. Tensions are simmering in Steynsrus.
