The Free State was vibrant with rhythm, color, and high-energy performances on Saturday, 15 June, as Dr. Böhmer Secondary School hosted the Free State Majorettes and Cheerleading Association (FSMCA) Provincial Championships.

The event brought together the province’s most talented majorettes and cheerleaders, all competing for a chance to participate in the SAMCA National Championships, which will take place in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, from 4 July to 12 July  2025.

After an exciting day of performances, teams from across the province were selected to represent the Free State on the national stage, a prestigious honor that acknowledges discipline, determination, and impressive teamwork.

In the Elite League, Relebeletse Primary School stood out by qualifying in all major categories, including large flag, pom-non-prop, mace, baton stage, small drill, and large drill. This achievement marks a historic milestone for the school.

In the President’s League, the following schools qualified in all six large sections: Mabolela Primary School, Rutanang Primary School, and Strydom Secondary School. In the small group sections, the qualifying teams included Rutanang Primary (small pom and flag), Sentraal Primary (small pom), and Strydom Secondary (small flag and mace).

The cheerleading division showcased fierce competition in both co-ed and all-girl categories. The teams selected to represent the Free State are Sentraal Primary, Koot Niemann Primary, Fichardtpark High, Phoenix Cheer Athletic, Sol Plaatje University, UFS, and CUT.

These teams will bring their energy and acrobatics to Oudtshoorn to compete among South Africa’s best. During the closing ceremony, athletes from Strydom Secondary School and Relebeletse Primary School received their provincial colors in majorettes, marking the first learners in the province to do so since 2019.

“I am most proud of the learners’ dedication and teamwork when it comes to the majorettes sport,” said Lesego Moreetsi, the developmental officer of Majorettes for the Association.

FSMCA Chairperson and chief adjudicator Mercia Nel praised the dedication and talent displayed throughout the event.

“Go in with courage and come out with pride. Your passion and performance have shown that the Free State is ready to compete at the highest level,” Nel told the teams.
