David Ngobeni is heartbroken after a fire consumed his business, resulting in the loss of years of hard work. David is the founder of the popular and successful business, Dafvhonj Designs, located in Qwaqwa, Free State, behind the Roman Catholic Church in Phuthaditjhaba.
As a talented fashion designer, David’s work captures attention. He explained that the fire was caused by an electrical fault originating from a plug.
“I woke up on the morning of Thursday, 19 June, preparing my son for school in the same room that burned. Around 7 a.m., I left the house and drove my son to school, which took about 10-15 minutes due to the gravel road from my house. On my way back, I received calls from my neighbors urging me to rush home because the house was on fire,” David shared.
Upon arriving, David found his working studio completely destroyed. Although his neighbours tried to extinguish the flames, it was too late. In the fire, David lost three brand new industrial sewing machines, including an overlocker and buttonhole sewing machine, which together are estimated to cost around R80,000.
He also lost matric farewell suits, dresses, Durban July outfits, and other items he was working on, along with all the materials used to create his clothing. This disaster has resulted in a significant financial loss. As a consequence of the fire, two employees are now temporarily out of work.
David is seeking assistance to purchase new fabrics, acquire sewing machines, and restore his working studio.
“I have worked so hard to get to where I am; I started from nothing. I’m shattered, frustrated, devastated, emotionally drained, and exhausted from cleaning up the mess caused by the fire. Nevertheless, I thank Almighty God for life; material things can be recovered,” he said.
