Thirteen-year-old Naledi Makama, a grade 7 student at Relebeletse Primary School in Bloemfontein, is determined to achieve greatness.

Her educational journey has been marked by challenges, growth, and incredible opportunities that have shaped her into a bright young woman with a promising future. At school, Naledi participates in various enrichment programs, including sports, languages, mental math, Olympiads, environmental projects, and community outreach initiatives.

She is also a member of the school’s Majorettes squad. In 2024, she achieved third place at the National Finals, where she was recognized as the best team leader of Relebeletse Primary School in the drill category.

On June 14, 2025, during the Provincial Majorettes Finals held in Bloemfontein, she earned first place as the best team leader in the drill category. The competition also acknowledges outstanding team leaders from the Majorettes teams. Naledi noted that all the activities she participates in contribute to her personal development, but one, in particular, has had a transformative impact—Majorettes.

“When I first joined the Majorettes team in 2023, I was a shy girl with low self-esteem and lacking confidence. Standing in front of others was intimidating, and I often doubted my abilities. However, being part of the Majorettes helped me break free from my insecurities,” she explained.

Through teamwork, discipline, and dedication, Majorettes has helped Naledi build her confidence. She has learned how to manage conflicts and celebrate shared successes with her teammates.

Currently, she is a member of the Free State Majorettes team, an honor she plans to carry even into high school next year. Being part of Majorettes has provided Naledi with travel opportunities, allowing her to attend competitions, meet new people, and form lasting friendships.

“More importantly, Majorettes has taught me valuable life skills that extend far beyond the field—leadership, resilience, and the importance of teamwork,” Naledi said.

She also actively participates in her school’s environmental initiatives and the Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP). Through these programs, they address real-life challenges faced by learners in their community.

One of Naledi’s proudest achievements as a member of YCAP is the school garden they established, where they plant and harvest food to support students whose families are struggling financially.

She credits her teachers and family for supporting and encouraging her to excel in school and aim high.
