From humble beginnings in Qwaqwa to competing on the world stage, Tshilwane Johannes Sonopo, popularly known as Sony Da Jumper, has become one of South Africa’s most accomplished rope skipping athletes.
Originally from Qwaqwa in the Free State and currently based in Bloemfontein, Sonopo has built an impressive career in rope skipping — a discipline that falls under gymnastics in South Africa.
Over the years, he has represented the country at national, continental, and international competitions, earning multiple medals and recognition for his skill and dedication. Sonopo’s journey into the sport began in 2009 while he was still in high school. What started as a simple introduction to rope skipping quickly turned into a promising career.
Within just a year of starting the sport, he qualified for the National Championships, where he made an immediate impact by winning two silver medals and one gold medal.

His talent soon propelled him onto the international stage. In 2016, Sonopo competed in his first World Championships in Sweden, where he secured a bronze medal in the triple unders event, marking his arrival among the world’s top athletes in the discipline.
The following year, in 2017, he participated in the World Championships in the United States, finishing in the Top 10 in the speed events, further cementing his reputation as one of the fastest rope skippers in the sport.
Sonopo continued his international success in 2019 when he competed in the World Championships in Norway, winning a bronze medal in the team events. Later that same year, he traveled to Asia to compete in the China Open Tournament, where he proudly brought home a silver medal.
His achievements continued to grow in recent years. At the 2023 World Championships in the United States, Sonopo delivered an outstanding performance by winning three silver medals in individual events, showcasing his consistency and elite-level performance.

In 2025, he once again represented South Africa at the World Championships in Japan, where he finished in the Top 6 in the 30-second speed event, competing against some of the best athletes from around the world.
Beyond his personal achievements, Sonopo is also deeply committed to developing the sport in South Africa. He currently serves on the discipline management committee for rope skipping, where he contributes to the growth, development, and increased participation of the sport across the country.
Through his dedication and achievements, Sony Da Jumper continues to inspire young athletes, proving that with passion, discipline, and perseverance, talent from the Free State can shine on the global stage.
