Sixteen-year-old Bonang Mohapi from Kroonstad in the Free State is set to represent both her province and South Africa in the UK. After winning an essay competition at her school, she earned the chance to travel to England, where she will participate in a unique academic experience.

Every year, Grade 10 and 11 learners at Bonang’s school are invited to submit motivational essays explaining why they should be chosen for this opportunity. Out of 24 submissions, Bonang made it into the top 10 and was subsequently invited for an interview. After a competitive selection process, she was chosen alongside three other learners.

Bonang is currently in Grade 11 at Calling Academy in Kroonstad. During her time in the UK, she will attend Oxford University, where she will experience the Oxford tutorial method. This approach emphasizes small group discussions with tutors, enabling students to delve deeply into ideas and hone their critical thinking skills.

“We will also have a tour day, allowing us to explore the university and learn more about its rich history and student life,” she said.

To make this trip a reality, Bonang needs to raise R26 150 to cover flights, visa fees, travel, food, and other expenses in London, as well as transportation from London to Oxford. The trip is scheduled from 26 June to 5 July, and Bonang is reaching out to kind-hearted individuals who might be willing to assist her in making this dream come true.

Those interested in helping can contact Bonang at 066 343 3409 or email her at bonangmohapi98@gmail.com.
