The Free State will proudly host this year’s Freedom Day celebration, as announced by Ntombizanele Beauty Sifuba, the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, during the official launch of Freedom Month in Bloemfontein on 1 April. The event served as a crucial platform to educate citizens about the history of their country and the importance of celebrating Freedom Day.
The national celebration of Freedom Day is set to take place in Bloemfontein on 27 April.
The significance of this year’s celebration is heightened as it aligns with the 30th anniversary of the democratic Constitution, the 50th commemoration of Youth Day—which honors the youth of 1976 who stood against the apartheid regime—and the 70th commemoration of the Women’s March against pass laws.
Edward Saunderson, President of the Free State Sport Confederation (FSSC), emphasized the importance of teaching younger generations that the freedom they enjoy today was hard-won and came at a great cost.
He remarked, “The freedom we have today was not cheap. It was attained through blood and tears.”
He also highlighted that true freedom will only be achieved when poverty, unemployment, inequality, and crime are overcome, stressing that sport can be a gateway to creating a prosperous society.
In her address, MEC Sifuba recounted the transformation of a nation that has moved from segregation and division to one of tolerance, acceptance, and unity, while still progressing on that journey. She urged South Africans to treasure and respect the Constitution, using it as an instrument for positive change.
Sifuba also underscored the role of sport in fostering social cohesion and uniting the country’s diverse cultural groups, asserting,
“We must use sport to unite all races and ethnic groups.”
