An unsettling incident has left residents of Phahameng, Bloemfontein, on edge after thieves targeted copper pipes and taps in the area.

Motlatsi Wilfred Mabela awoke on Wednesday morning to a distressing scene., the yard was flooded due to the theft of a tap and copper pipe connected to his geyser, which occurred the previous night.

“This is becoming a serious problem. These criminals are going around the area, looking for houses with copper taps and pipes. Then, they strike under the cover of darkness.” said Mabela.

Mabela’s experience serves as a stark warning to other residents. Copper theft is not uncommon, and criminals often target these valuable metals for their resale value.

With the festive season approaching, residents are urged to be extra vigilant. This includes:

Keeping an eye on your property: Look out for suspicious activity, especially at night. If you see anything unusual, report it to the authorities immediately.
Improving security: Consider installing security lights and alarms to deter potential thieves.
Replacing copper with alternative materials: Switching to plastic or galvanized steel pipes can significantly reduce the risk of theft.
“This festive season, let’s be proactive and protect our homes. By taking appropriate precautions, we can make it difficult for these criminals to operate.”

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
