On the 25th of January, the Bloemfontein SPCA was set to appear in the Rouxville magistrates court for a case of illegal hunting opened in 2022 when the inspectorate team noticed a donkey-drawn cart that was severely overloaded with gravel.
The team noticed that the donkeys were in poor condition and showed signs of injury and discomfort.
The cart was stopped and an inspection was conducted on the two equines. During the inspection the true reality of the abuse set in. The donkeys had multiple lacerations from being hit by the owner. Multiple saddle sores were noted as the harnessing used was homemade and would cause immense pressure on the donkey’s necks, chests, and skulls.
The SPCA further noticed that a septic open wound was present inside the mouth of one of the donkeys as the bit used was incorrect.
“The Inspectorate team decided to confiscate the donkeys and a case of animal cruelty was been opened against 3 men in the magisterial district of Rouxville for the incident. The assistance of these two donkeys however was a time-consuming and financially taxing activity. As the majority of the inspectorate team was involved.” Said Bloemfontein SPCA Spokesperson Reinet Meyer
4 trips were made between Bloemfontein and Rouxville by the Bloemfontein SPCA team. They further drove to Bloemfontein to acquire an adequate trailer to ensure that the cart would not return to the owner.
The SPCA would like the public to assist them with an amount of R3700 which will go towards their expenses in the donkey case as they have paid a large part of their expenses.
