International Literacy Day, celebrated annually on 8 September, took center stage as Grade 6 to 8 learners from Thaba Nchu schools commemorated the day at the Barolong Boo Seleka Tribal Authority. The festivities began with a walk for awareness on literacy, emphasizing the importance of reading for meaning and understanding.
Throughout the day, learners engaged in various activities, including reading aloud, book reviews, independent and paired reading, and storytelling. This initiative from the department aims to promote literacy, foster a culture of reading, and raise community awareness about the foundational role of literacy in lifelong learning.
The occasion was made even more special as it coincided with Kgosi Gaboilelwe Moroka’s birthday, turning the event into a double celebration. Among the day’s highlights, Kgosi Moroka read from a book named after her, the Kgosi Gaboilelwe Moroka Shero Series.
In her address to the learners, Kgosi Moroka quoted a verse from the holy book, saying, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” She expressed her joy in gathering with the children, stating, “I have been chosen to shepherd, steward, and lead these children. What is happening today is symbolic of something much bigger than us. Looking at these children who are the future, we are planting seeds that will bear fruit for the future. There is no bigger birthday gift than this one.”
Kgosi Moroka also emphasized the importance of developing children holistically, not just academically. She highlighted the need for full support from all stakeholders, asserting that education is a societal matter.
Encouraging the learners, she declared that nothing should stop them from reaching their full potential, not even their circumstances.
