The Re Phethile Art Production team visited the Sol Plaatjie Dam to learn about the history of Workers’ Day, commemorating the 51 workers who lost their lives on their journey from the Northern Cape to Qwaqwa.
The team also celebrated Workers’ Day in style at Bethlehem Street, wearing their favorite work outfits to honor the hard work and dedication of workers everywhere. The program began at their rehearsal space and culminated in a visit to Sol Plaatjie Dam, where they received a history lesson from Leonard Slabbert, a hero who bravely rescued eight people from a submerged bus in the dam.

Production Director Lekgutsa Mbele stated, “We brought the young people here to learn about this place and the tragedy that occurred on 1 May 2003. We’re creating a documentary series to remind people of this painful history.”

The production team, composed of unemployed youth from the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, is seeking sponsors to complete their project.
Treasurer and Project Manager Seipati Moloi mentioned, “We need sponsors to continue this work. Those who can help can contact us at rephethileartproduction@gmail.com.This initiative aims to educate the youth about the significance of Workers’ Day and the sacrifices made by workers.”
Re Phethile Art Production hopes to expand their project to various locations throughout the municipality and beyond.
