June is recognized as Youth Month in South Africa, a time to highlight both the achievements and challenges faced by young people in the country. It is also an opportunity to remember and celebrate the sacrifices made by the youth during the 1976 protests.
We spoke to the youth in Free State about the significance of Youth Month and Youth Day and their relevance to today’s young people. Masego Derulo from Thaba Nchu emphasized that Youth Month serves as a reminder of the bravery displayed by the youth of 1976.
He noted that the current generation still faces challenges, particularly unemployment, and urged young people to use this month to advocate for their role in combating unemployment and other social issues affecting them.

Kelello Mhlongo from Botshabelo stressed that young people should not rely solely on the government; instead, they must take initiative and create their own opportunities. He acknowledged the importance of celebrating the heroes of 1976 but pointed out that the current youth often do not benefit from the funds allocated for these celebrations.
Mhlongo also mentioned that Youth Month and Youth Day should inspire young people to become their own bosses and pursue entrepreneurial ventures.
Lethabo Matlakeng from Bloemfontein highlighted that Youth Month and Youth Day are significant as they show that young people are making their mark and achieving excellence in various sports and career fields. She reiterated that Youth Month serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976.
Puseletso Mokhali, also from Bloemfontein, expressed that Youth Day and Month represent more than just dates on the calendar; they are powerful reminders of the resilience, courage, and potential that exist within every young person.
