Life Rosepark Hospital has announced the early success of its collaboration with Universitas Academic Hospital in expanding access to life-saving, minimally invasive aortic care for patients in the Free State public health sector.

The Free State Advanced Aortic Centre was launched in January with the opening of the first Vascular Hybrid Theatre Complex in central South Africa. It is already improving access to highly specialised care previously unavailable in the region.

Since its launch, two public sector patients from Universitas Academic Hospital with complex aortic aneurysms have undergone successful minimally invasive procedures in the hybrid vascular theatre, with excellent outcomes.

The Centre has recently treated an emergency case involving a patient transferred from Kimberley with a ruptured aorta. The patient required urgent advanced endovascular repair, which was performed successfully, and is recovering well.

Procedures were performed by Dr Sam Letsoara and Dr Wikus Mulder from Universitas Academic Hospital, under the proctorship of Prof Asha Malan, vascular surgeon at Life Rosepark Hospital.
