Visual artist Sobi Matsubukanye from Phomolong in Hennenman in the Free State is cementing his name in visual artistry.

Sobi’s artworks are captivating and continue to mesmerize his followers on social media and in his hometown.

He grew up as a shy child and visual art was his way of escaping challenges he faced while growing up. Art became Sobi’s therapy and he has never looked back.

Talking to Free State World, the Phomolong visual artist reiterated that, his work is inspired by daily life, challenges, music, and nature amongst other things.

“I’m able to express myself through visual content and I live by the motto art is not a crime,” Sobi said.

He charges according to the time it takes him to make an artwork, he charges R700 for an A3 Portrait and R1500 for an A1 portrait. Sobi sells his work on the streets, and outside libraries and does in-house calls.

The Hennenman-based artist is a self-taught visual artist. He doesn’t have a permanent place where he works and would appreciate assistance with a container as when it rains or when it’s windy, he cannot work. Sobi is also inspired by Ennock M’s art which continues to play a mammoth role in his life.
