The Archdiocese of Bloemfontein has bid farewell to Reverend Father Thabo David Lesenyeho, the parish priest of Our Lady of Fatima in Rocklands, who was laid to rest on Wednesday 22 April following a solemn Requiem Mass held at Kagisanong Hall.

Fr Lesenyeho (1975–2026), a devoted priest and shepherd of God’s people, was remembered for his faithful ministry, pastoral heart, and steadfast commitment to the Gospel. Clergy, religious, and the lay faithful gathered in large numbers to commend his soul to God and to give thanks for a life poured out in service to the Church.

The funeral was also attended by international guests, including a bishop from Lesotho, reflecting the far-reaching impact of his ministry and the esteem in which he was held beyond the Archdiocese.

The funeral liturgy was presided over by Archbishop Emeritus Zabulane Nxumalo, who reflected on the late priest’s life as one marked by fidelity to his vocation and generous service to the People of God. He spoke of a priest who laboured diligently in the Lord’s vineyard and remained rooted in prayer, humility, and pastoral charity.

Ordained to the sacred priesthood in 2003, Fr Lesenyeho served with distinction in various pastoral assignments, including in Thaba Nchu, before his appointment to Our Lady of Fatima, Rocklands, where he ministered until his passing. His service extended beyond the parish, contributing to the life of the Archdiocese through key roles, including Judicial Vicar and involvement in ecclesial structures that support the mission of the Church.

A Shepherd Close to His Flock

Fr Lesenyeho will be especially remembered for his closeness to the faithful, particularly the youth, whom he guided with wisdom, compassion, and a joyful spirit.

Gomolemo Nkgashu, a young member of the parish, reflected on his impact“Fr Lesenyeho was not just a priest, but a father to many. He loved us, cared for us, and was a pillar of strength to so many. I will remember him for his pure love, his wise guidance, his deep love for the Church, and his humour. His joy uplifted us. We have lost a giant.”

A Faithful Servant Called Home

Those who knew Fr Lesenyeho describe him as a priest who embodied Christ the Good Shepherd — attentive, selfless, and deeply committed to the spiritual growth of his people. His formation in Canon Law and his service within the Archdiocese reflected both intellectual depth and a profound sense of responsibility toward the Church.

As the Archdiocese mourns his passing, it also gives thanks for the gift of his priesthood and the witness of his life. In the words often prayed in the Church’s liturgy, may the Lord grant him eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Fr Lesenyeho is survived by his family, brother priests, and a community of faithful whose lives were enriched by his ministry.
