While for many artists, gospel music is a career and a means of earning a living, for Thenjiwe Khatiane, known professionally as Thenjiwe Vilakazi, it is an expression of her devotion and a way to lead others in worship.
Based in Bloemfontein, Thenjiwe discovered her passion for gospel music in 1998, and since then, she has dedicated herself to her calling. Her journey into gospel music began when she won the first prize at the Free State Corner Stone Gospel Music competition in the same year, solidifying her commitment to this genre.
Inspired by the love and greatness of God, Thenjiwe was motivated to sing gospel music, drawing influence from iconic artists like Tramaine Walkins and Brook Benton. Over the years, she has released an album, an EP, and several singles, with her notable hit music video “Ndithembe Wena” earning her the Best Music Video award in 2024.
Her musical journey took off with the release of her first twelve-track album in 2012, and she celebrated her first major accolade with the Free State Gospel Music Awards (FREEGOSMA) in 2024.
“My music reflects my personal experiences and explores themes of God’s love, hope, and self-esteem,” said Thenjiwe, emphasizing the heartfelt nature of her work.
Recently, she made waves at the relaunch of Macufe, captivating the audience and ushering them into a worship experience that left them wanting more.
“I am honored to have performed at Macufe. I approached the opportunity with confidence as chances like these are rare, and I feel truly privileged,” she shared.
Throughout her career, Thenjiwe has performed on significant stages, including Macufe and Imvelo Safari Lodge, and has taken her talent beyond borders, performing in Zimbabwe, Namibia (Windhoek), and the Eastern Cape.
Her story is a testament to the profound impact of music as a medium for worship and connection to the divine.
