Self-taught painter and artist Karabo Prince Mafeo from F-Section in Bothsabelo has taken the phrase, “Wake up and Smell the Coffee” literally, and he ensures that those who buy his artworks can literally smell the coffee on them.
That is because Karabo uses coffee in his artworks instead of normal paint. This creative method has earned him much praise on social media.
After completing his sketch, he mixes coffee powder with a small amount of water to make it stick to the paper.

After applying the coffee to the artwork, he lets it dry. Depending on how much water he adds to the coffee he is able to determine the colour he wants for the painting, either light or dark.
Karabo explained that he is ambitious, creative, and always looking for new ways to improve his artworks and challenge himself. That is why he decided to use coffee. The response after he shared the results on social media was amazing.
According to Karabo, he doesn’t consider the time when working on his artwork, but focuses more on the final product.
“Artists have to be creative and come up with new methods other than using a pencil or paint. They need to think out of the box,” said Karabo.
The price for his work depends on the size, amount of time to be put in and the client’s needs.
