Fourteen students from Itemoheng Primary School in Marquard were rushed to Mamello Clinic yesterday after reportedly consuming snacks believed to be contaminated. The students, who had purchased the snacks from local tuck shops, began experiencing severe stomach cramps and vomiting during the school day, causing distress among staff and students alike.
The school staff immediately alerted parents, who arrived quickly to collect their children and bring them to safety. Witnesses at the scene described chaotic scenes as students cried in pain, with some parents expressing deep concerns over the source of the suspected poisoning.
Medical staff at Mamello Clinic have confirmed that all 14 students are in stable condition as they undergo further tests to determine the cause of the symptoms.
In response to the incident, several tuck shops in the area temporarily closed their doors, reportedly removing snacks and baked goods from their shelves. This decision has sparked community suspicion, with one concerned parent, who asked to remain anonymous, questioning why certain shops took down items so quickly. “Why did they take away the snacks and cakes after this happened?” the parent asked. “It feels like they know what they did.”
Police have yet to issue an official statement but have confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the source and cause of the suspected poisoning. Community members are now calling for stricter food safety regulations and accountability to protect their children from similar incidents.
Updates on the students’ condition and the ongoing investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
