In a case that has shaken the Mangaung community and dragged for years, well known Bloemfontein Bishop, Michael Lebajoa, was today (13 December) found guilty of raping a Park Road policewoman.

Mannehileng Letuka, an ambassador for the People’s Peace Foundation in the Free State and a vocal advocate against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), was present at the court in support of the victim.

Commenting on the verdict, Letuka expressed mixed emotions.

“While we are happy to see the bishop finally face the consequences of his actions, we are disappointed with the 12-year sentence,” she stated.

“We believe justice has been served, but the sentence feels inadequate.”

Letuka also addressed the concerning trend of violence in Bloemfontein, highlighting the recent spate of murders that left the community in fear.

“What is happening in Bloemfontein is a total madness. There seems to be a serial killer on the loose, and we cannot allow this to become the new normal. I urge everyone to be cautious and vigilant.”

In light of the ongoing issues surrounding GBV, Letuka emphasized the importance of stricter systems and harsher penalties.

“We need proper, stringent measures in place to address GBV. These systems need to be effective for both first-time offenders and repeat offenders.”

Letuka is urging organizations involved in GBV campaigns to provide more resources for victims.

“It is crucial that we offer concrete support to those affected by GBV. This includes access to counseling, legal aid, and other essential services.”
