Residents of Matlwangtlwang in Steynsrus, Free State, are growing increasingly frustrated as they endured over two weeks without electricity since a powerful storm wreaked havoc on 7 December. The aftermath has left homes in darkness, appliances broken, and everyday tasks such as cooking have become challenging due to the prolonged outage.
The storm caused significant damage, including destroying a High Mast Lighting (Apolo Light also known as Motho-wa mmona) structure which fell onto a resident’s roof. This visible reminder of the storm’s impact adds to the anxiety felt by the residents.
Free State World reached out to Dika Kheswa, the spokesperson for the Moqhaka Municipality, regarding allegations of insufficient Eskom electricians causing delays in repairs. While he acknowledged the ongoing challenges, he couldn’t speak on behalf of Eskom.
“I can’t speak on behalf of Eskom, but what I know is that most of the area’s electricity is restored. According to my information, Eskom workers are diligently working towards full restoration.” He stated.
However, for the residents facing the harsh reality of life without electricity, his assurances fall short. They spent Reconciliation Day hindered by the lack of power. Cooking has become a mammoth task, requiring alternative methods like firewood.
The fallen High Mast Lighting structure ( Apolo Light) continues to linger, serving as a constant reminder of the storm’s devastation and the seemingly slow response to address it.
Kheswa provided a glimmer of hope and said “The High Mast Lighting will be removed by tomorrow. We had trouble finding a crane large enough to assist, but it has finally been secured.”
While the promise of removing the fallen pole offers some relief, the lack of electricity remains the primary concern for residents. As Christmas approaches, the hope for a joyous celebration diminishes with each passing day without power.
Free State World will continue to monitor and report on this story, providing updates as they unfold.
