More than one million cattle have been vaccinated against the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). The Free State Provincial Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs announced.
More than one million cattle have been vaccinated against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) since the beginning of the mass vaccination campaign that has been running between March 2026 and up to 16th June 2026.
This achievement represents approximately 33% of the province’s estimated cattle population of 3 million, and marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to contain and control the further spread of FMD virus in the Free State Province.
The vaccination campaign has been characterised by considerable human, financial, and physical resource constraints, which were further exacerbated by unfavourable climatic conditions, extensive geographical areas to cover, and difficult terrain, logistical challenges with vaccine supply, and other demands associated with disease outbreak management.
Achieving the one million vaccinations within three months under these circumstances is a testament to the commitment and determination of all of the field staff, as well as all the people who were able to lend a helping hand to the achievement of this goal.
The Department extended its sincere appreciation to all farmers, animal health technicians, organised agriculture, industry partners, and state veterinary government officials who have contributed to this collective effort.
The vaccination campaign will continue across the province as part of a broader strategy aimed at limiting the spread of FMD, protecting agricultural production, and safeguarding the livelihoods of communities that depend on the livestock sector.
