It’s all systems go for the inaugural Alinah Mazibuko Foundation (AMF)  School Sport Tournament. The tournament is expected to bring the small town of Warden in the Eastern Free State to a standstill on Saturday 28 October.

The tournament will be held at Ezenzelini Sports Ground in Warden, Eastern Free State. Speaking to Free State World, Alinah Mazibuko, the founder of AMF said the aim and purpose of the school sports tournament is simply going back to the basics.

“We have noticed that our youth in schools have too much time on their hands hence they end up doing drugs and our young girls end up falling pregnant at an early age. By hosting this tournament, we will be allowing them to take time to practice and keep them busy after school and that will be one way to eliminate social ills that we are facing in our community.” Alinah commented.

The tournament is open and inclusive of all schools in Warden, those participating will receive five pairs of school shoes and packs of sanitary pads.

Soccer, Netball, and Indigenous games are the sporting codes that will participate in the tournament. Trophies, medals, and soccer, and netball kits are some of the prizes that winners will walk away with.

“Our goal is to see this tournament getting bigger and next year we are hoping to involve all Phumelela schools, the district, and if it happens, make it a provincial tournament. We have neglected the young ones for a long time, but now if we can show them that we still care about them, we can conquer social ills” said Alinah.
