Tears of joy and celebration filled the air during the official unveiling of the Khulani Pre-School, located in Thaba Nchu, Free State Province, South Africa.
Originally established in 2010 by the late Ivy Qaji, the pre-school has continued to thrive under the leadership of her daughter, Bongiwe Masakala, who took over after her mother’s passing.

The pre-school, once housed in makeshift shacks, has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to the support from For Afrika and its overseas donors, who helped construct a new brick building.

The newly built Khulani facility features two modern classrooms, restrooms, a kitchen, an office, and a sickbay, significantly enhancing the learning environment for its young learners. During the heartfelt handover ceremony, Bongiwe Masakala expressed her emotions and gratitude to For Afrika, the donors, and the team that made this dream a reality.

The event saw the attendance of community members, parents, and representatives from various local organizations, including Ward 42 Councillor Mr. Mothupi, Barolong Boo Seleka representative Princess Omphile Moroka, Selosesha SAPS (South African Police Services) Reverend Katiso Nkhoesa, Palesa Diboke from the Free State Department of Education, and a representative from the South African Congress for Early Childhood Development, represented by Lydia Motaung.

Bongiwe shared her excitement, stating, “I am very happy and excited about the building because it has brought light to the centre and uplifting the spirits of both teachers and children. Teachers and children will now be even happier to come to school.”

Fabienne Fiechter, the leader of the Khulani makeover team, expressed pride in the project. Although they were volunteers and it was not easy while collect funds, witnessing the impact of their efforts on the children’s lives was rewarding.

“We are very happy we made such a nice and good place for the children here. I did it before, but every-time we do it, it feels like the first time, I am happy for the children, cant event describe it in words. I am very proud of the team who made such a good job.” Said Fiechter.

Adele Terblanche, the Community Development Officer for For Afrika-South Africa, noted the significance of the new facility, stating, “This is one of the schools that will still remain in twenty years’ time, because of the people’s love towards education and Khulani ECD.”
The unveiling marks a new chapter for Khulani Pre-School, promising a brighter future for the children of Thaba Nchu.
