Free State Traditional leaders have paid homage to the family of the late COPE leader, Mosiuoa ‘Terror’ Lekota, following his passing on 4 March 2026.

Morena e Moholo wa Bakoena ba Mopeli, Morena Moremoholo Motebang Mopeli, and Kgosi Gaboilelwe Moroka of the Barolong Boo Seleka visited the Lekota family home in Bloemfontein to convey their condolences and stand in solidarity with the family during this difficult time.

Free State traditional leaders remembered Mr. Lekota for the role he played in the formation of the Free State Provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders in 1997 — a process they say he supported with commitment and respect for the institution of traditional leadership, and in recognition of the role of traditional leadership within a democratic dispensation.

Mr. Lekota served South Africa with distinction as Premier of the Free State, former Chairperson of the Council of Provinces, and former Minister of Defence. His contribution to public service and the country’s democratic journey will be remembered.
