Jagersfontein may be a small town, but one young woman is dedicated to documenting its life and beauty through photography.
Karabo Mathapelo Legetla, a multidisciplinary artist from Jagersfontein in the Free State, has a remarkable ability to capture the skies, landscapes, and architecture using only her smartphone. Many would assume she uses an expensive camera, but her artistic talent shines through her mobile device. Karabo began taking pictures of the sky in 2021 while she was in Grade 11.
Although it wasn’t her initial plan, she felt an irresistible urge to capture the beauty of the sky. While her focus shifted to poetry and acting for some time, she returned to her first passion in December 2024, resuming her sunset photography with her phone. This time, the young artist expanded her repertoire by experimenting with different subjects, incorporating people as shadows in her frames while keeping the sky and nature as her main focus.
“A good friend of mine created a logo for me to help maintain the originality and authenticity of my work. On January 19, 2025, I decided to create a Facebook page called K Soso, where I began posting the pictures I take,” Karabo explained.
Nature plays a crucial role in her photography. Karabo believes there is immense artistry in the natural world, especially in her small town. Her work aims to showcase the beauty of Jagersfontein—whether through the sky, local residents, or historical sites—blending nature with artistry.
One challenge Karabo faces as a photographer is the lack of access to professional equipment. This sometimes leads to her being underestimated due to her small-town background and status as a budding artist. Nevertheless, she has learned to utilize what she has, staying true to her creative voice.
“I truly appreciate the support I receive from my community. The people of Jagersfontein show love for my art, share my work, and encourage me to continue.
