International films set to be screened in Bloemfontein

Hit internationally made film and a documentary will be screened in Bloemfontein from 1-2 March. The film “Can you See Us?” and the thought-provoking documentary ” The Colonel’s Stray Dogs” will be screened at the Waaihoek Wesleyan Church Theatre.

“Can You See Us?” film tells the story of Joseph, a boy living with albinism who was rejected by his father at birth, and raised by his mother and a loving stepfather.

Joseph has to navigate the harsh realities of life, including a life-changing incident where he is nearly killed for muti rituals and losing his mother, but after being sent to a boarding school, he realizes his musical talent and becomes a superstar, and ends up reconciling with his biological father.

“The Colonel’s Stray Dogs” documentary, directed by Khalid Shamis, tells the story of a father and freedom fighter, absent from his family while dedicating his life to Libya. The Colonel’s Stray Dogs observes a father and son uncovering years of underground military operations, international collusion with intelligence agencies, a family hiding in exile in a South London suburb, a freed country in a civil war, and a second exile.

Film graduate Mpho Tau from Bloemfontein is bringing the films to Bloemfontein for movie lovers to get a chance to see these thought-provoking films.

The directors of the films will be in attendance to engage with the audience after the screenings. They will help the audience to learn more about the films, engage further with them on what inspired them, and have a question and answer session with the audience.

According to Mpho Tau, the directors of “Can You See Us” film Kenny Roc Mumba and Yasmin Dodia-Mumba from Zambia will help the audience to learn more about the film, especially since it highlights the challenges and stigma that people living with albinism face.

Tau explained that he is bringing the films for Mangaung and Free State audiences to learn from filmmakers from other parts of Africa and see how the art of filmmaking can unite Africans in storytelling.

Speaking about the ” The Colonel’s Stray Dogs” Tau stated that the is a lot to learn from the documentary and how Khalid Shamis beautifully directed the film in a captivating and educational way that will leave the audience wanting more.
