On Saturday, 4 July, Dr. Viljoen High School in Bloemfontein was abuzz with excitement as the Mangaung Metro Football Academy launched its new season kits and jerseys for all age divisions. The event featured more than 170 players, boys and girls, from the under-9 through under-19 teams, along with their coaches and proud parents.
The six-member committee of Mangaung Metro Academy, led by Ogone Mpuru, was in attendance, including the deputy chairperson, Mr. Ernest Mohlahlo. Also present was Vela Khumalo, the national team coach of the under-17s and under-20s, as well as a DDC coach at Kaizer Chiefs as the guest of honour. He took the time to engage with parents, players, and the committee chairman, sharing insights and encouragement ahead of the new season.
Following the launch, friendly matches were held where the under-17 and under-19 squads played against other local teams. This gave Coach Vela Khumalo a firsthand look at the talented young footballers Bloemfontein has to offer.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Mpuru, the chairperson, expressed heartfelt gratitude: “I want to thank all the parents, the kids, and the coaches for their dedication and for making sure that today was a success. A special thank you to Coach for traveling from Johannesburg to be with us and for gracing us with his presence. We do hope that he’s seen some players who will one day be coached by him at national level.”
