Young people in Mangaung are taking bold steps to confront unemployment by turning to the arts as a source of income and social change.

A group of passionate local creatives will stage a powerful production titled “Basadi Ba Mangaung” at the Civic Theatre on 12 and 13 March 2025. The play not only showcases homegrown talent but also seeks to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the community.

Production director Keorapetse Moiloa said the initiative was inspired by the growing unemployment rate and the rise of drug abuse among young people in Mangaung. He believes theatre can serve as both a platform for employment and a tool for social awareness.

“Unemployment continues to rise every day. Through this production, we want to create opportunities for young people and give them a chance to explore their talents. We have realised that local productions are often overlooked, yet they have the potential to uplift our communities,” Moiloa said.

The play tackles sensitive issues affecting women and families in the region, including gender-based violence, child neglect and betrayal among women driven by financial desperation. According to Moiloa, the aim is to reflect realities that many in the community experience but rarely discuss openly.

“Our focus is to highlight the killings of women that are happening around Mangaung, child negligence and how women sometimes turn against each other for money. We want to start conversations and encourage unity,” he said.

The production features a seven-member cast drawn from across the Free State Province. Keorapetse Moiloa takes on the lead role of Masia. He is joined by Tshepiso Kgomo as Motshelisi, Bokang Lekhetho in a dual role as Sabata and Ntate Moholo, Lemohang Moahloli as Moliehi, and Basetsana Lesimula as Lesedi. Each character contributes to a storyline that reflects everyday struggles within the community.

Tickets for the show are priced at an affordable R70 per person, making the production accessible to students, families and community members who wish to support local talent.

Through Basadi Ba Mangaung, Mangaung’s youth are proving that creativity can be a powerful weapon against unemployment. By stepping onto the stage, they are not only telling a story, but they are also creating opportunities and shaping a more hopeful future for themselves and their community.
