Motheo TVET Students: Pay or You Won’t Receive Your Results

Students at Motheo TVET College are frustrated after the institution allegedly blocked them from accessing their results. It has been reported that students were told they must settle any outstanding balances before they could obtain their results.

The situation is particularly upsetting for these students, as they are funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and cannot understand how they ended up owing the college, especially since NSFAS is supposed to pay the college directly. Furthermore, students have been informed that they must clear their outstanding balances in order to register for the 2025 academic year.

One student, who recently completed studies at Motheo TVET College, explained that since 2020, students have applied for NSFAS and met the necessary criteria.

However, they allegedly discovered that the college failed to send their documentation to NSFAS. This has led to a blame game between NSFAS and Motheo: the college blames NSFAS, while NSFAS points the finger at Motheo.

“They said if you owe the college, you won’t get to see your results. One thing we don’t understand is that we know textbooks at TVET Colleges are free, yet the management at Motheo (allegedly) wants students to return the textbooks or they won’t be allowed to register.” Said the student.

Another grievance raised by the students pertains to laptops that NSFAS allegedly promised to provide for remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The college allegedly took the initiative to purchase the laptops, with the aim of being reimbursed by NSFAS later.

“We were given Asus-branded laptops, and now students are allegedly being charged for them, with fees exceeding the actual price of the laptops. We have been told that we must pay for the laptops,” said a student who has completed their studies but is still waiting for their certificate.

As a result, some students who recently finished their studies are unable to receive their certificates, preventing them from enrolling in other institutions of higher learning. Other students from various Motheo campuses are also reportedly affected by this issue.

Motheo TVET College released a Facebook post regarding the academic results, which addressed students as follows: “Attention students, regarding the release of academic results: If you are funded by NSFAS or a private bursary and your results are currently blocked, please visit the Student Support Services (SSS). Speak to the Assistant Campus Manager (ACM) to verify your funding status.”

For self-paying students who have settled their outstanding debts and have proof, they are advised to go to the ASM academic office at their respective campuses or contact the SSS official. Those with outstanding balances are urged to settle them immediately, as the college has emphasized that failing to do so may limit their ability to register for the upcoming semester.

Motheo TVET College confirmed to Free State World that the students were told settle outstanding balances.

The College said if a student is responsible for paying their own tuition fees (self-paying), they are required to settle any outstanding amounts. The college typically expects students to clear any unpaid fees in order to continue their studies or to be eligible for certain services, such as access to transcripts, or certificates.

“If a student is funded by NSFAS, the college should not be asking students to pay tuition fees directly, as NSFAS pays the college on behalf of the student. However, there may be situations where discrepancies arise, such as delays in payment from NSFAS, or issues with the student’s funding application. In such cases, the college might ask NSFAS-funded students to provide proof of their funding status. Once the student submits this proof, the college will verify the information with NSFAS and, if confirmed, the student will be allowed to continue their studies or receive their results without any further payment required from the student. If a student is facing such an issue, it’s important to ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted promptly and to communicate with the college for clarification.” Said Motheo TVET College.

Regarding if the is a miscommunication between the College and NSFAS, the college said the is none. However, confusion might arise if there are delays in payments or issues with the verification of funding.

As long as the students provide the required proof of NSFAS funding, the College will verify the information and allow students to proceed with their studies or receive their results accordingly.

On documentations not being sent to NSFAS by the TVET, Motheo emphasized that a delay might be caused due to incomplete documentation submitted by the students.

“NSFAS requires certain documents from students in order to process their funding, and if any of these documents were missing or incomplete, it could cause delays in disbursements or verification. If students were directed between the College, NSFAS, and Motheo, it could be due to a process where the College verifies the student’s status and then NSFAS ensures the funding.” Said Motheo.

The College encourages students to carefully review the list of required documents and ensure they have submitted everything needed to both NSFAS and the College. This will help avoid any further confusion and streamline the process.

To address the challenges students are facing and ensure they receive their results, the College added that it is taking proactive steps by encouraging students to directly contact the finance department for assistance. Students who are experiencing issues with their funding or documentation are advised to reach out to the finance team at 051 014 7664 for clarification and resolution.

Additionally, the College issues certificates from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Monday to Thursday.
