Clarens and the Bee

Clarens and the Bee, which is the First Annual Clarens Spelling Bee Competition, was held on Tuesday, 24 September at the Dihlabeng Church Hall in Clarens. The competition was hosted by the Tshireletsa Bana Foundation for young creatives within Clarens and beyond.

The purpose of such events is to enhance linguistic skills in young children and to develop their ability to comprehend text and spoken language. Moreover, the objective is to develop writing and speaking skills and to boost their self-confidence.

Through such an initiative, Tshireletsa Bana Foundation intends to help boost the children’s academic performances and their comprehension of the English language as it is a language in academia and professional spaces in South Africa and beyond.

The participants in the event were primary school children between the ages of nine (9) to thirteen (13). The schools that took part were Dihlabeng Christian School, Clarens Primary School, Clarens Combined School, and one learner from Teboho Primary School in Qwaqwa.
The winners were classified according to their grades.

Letlotlo Motloung from Clarens Primary Schools obtained first position in the grade 3 category, Lesedi Twala also from Clarens
Primary School obtained first position in the grade 4 and 5 categories, while Tshegofatso Madonsela from Teboho Primary School in Qwaqwa obtained first position in the grade 6 and 7 categories.


All winners walked away with gold trophies while their runners-up walked away with gold, silver, and bronze medals. Bev Alho, the author of “I Am a Child of Africa” graced the event with her presence as the guest speaker.
