As part of the Free State Tourism Month celebrations, MEC Ketso Makume co-hosted the South African Rally Raid Championship on Saturday, 14 September, at Phakisa Raceway in Welkom. This high-adrenaline event attracted 17 racing teams, competing for the prestigious title over an off-road course spanning approximately 400km across the Matjhabeng Local Municipality farmland.
The race featured over 15 viewing points, offering spectators an exhilarating experience of the rugged Free State terrain. MEC Makume emphasized the importance of hosting such events, noting that it boosts tourism and promotes the Free State as a destination of choice.
He expressed his excitement upon hearing that guesthouses around Welkom were nearly fully booked, highlighting the significant economic impact of the event on local businesses.
The race concluded successfully, with the following teams emerging as winners: Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings (1s position) Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy (2nd Position) and Giniel de Villiers and Elvene Vonk (3rd Position)
This thrilling event not only entertained motorsport fans but also reinforced the Free State’s tourism potential.
