Prominent businesswoman Candida “Candy” Crystal Smith, was sentenced by the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday 2 February 2024 after it found her guilty for fraud and contravention of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011.

Candy’s sentencing follows a South African Revenue Service (SARS) investigation which revealed that she submitted false returns for the tax period 2019 to 2020, resulting in the Revenue collector losing about R472 701.

The Hawks in Bloemfontein investigated the case which resulted in Smith’s sentencing. Smith was sentenced to a fine of R300 000 or three years imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years. She was also ordered to repay the remaining amount by 2029.
