A Bloemfontein woman and her daughter have been left homeless after the boyfriend of the woman allegedly set their shack ablaze on Sunday 25 August.
The incident allegedly happened at the Joe Slovo settlement in Bloemfontein, Free State around 20:43. The victim, identified as Betty Kotzee, and her 8-year-old daughter narrowly escaped the furnace that destroyed their home.
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect allegedly using a gas cylinder to set the shack on fire. Members of the community were horrified to see the shack engulfed in flames.
Ward Councillor Supi Mahoko praised a bystander who attempted to extinguish the blaze even though he could not save the shack.
The suspect is allegedly on the run, and a case has been opened with the police.
