Retired members of the former Bophuthatswana Police held their annual gathering recently at Bodulo Lodge in Thaba Nchu. The organization comprises retired policemen and women who served in the police during the era of Bophuthatswana before they were absorbed into the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The Bophuthatswana Government, led by the late Lucas Mangope, included Thaba Nchu as one of its areas of governance, with the North West Province serving as its headquarters.

Members of this organization are spread across South Africa, with various regional meetings held throughout the year. They come together for a provincial gathering to celebrate life, share updates on regional performances, reminisce about their time in the police force, and honour those who have lost their lives.

Oarabile Simon Sesing, the Chairperson of the Former Bophuthatswana Police Legends, stated that the organization was formed in 2022 out of a desire to reconnect with former Bophuthatswana police members scattered across the country. The aim was to check on their well-being, bring them together, support one another, and encourage community involvement.

Sesing explained that last year’s national gathering took place in Mmabatho, while this year, the Free State was selected as the host province.

“Every year, all our regions (provinces) across the country gather to celebrate, network, socialize, and check on each other. We also take time to remember members we lost in the previous year or the same year,” said Sesing.

The organization has over 300 members, with 214 attending the provincial gathering. The 2025 gathering is scheduled to be hosted in Garankuwa, Gauteng.
