One person lost their life and two were injured when five trucks and a car collided on the N1 road on Thursday 11 July 2022.
At about 09:37, an accident was reported on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei where 5 trucks and 1 car were involved in a collision. The Free State Health Department Spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said one patient in a small vehicle was Trapped and Declared dead on the scene.
3 patients (1 critically injured and 2 slightly injured) and were transported to Bram Fischer Busamed Hospital in Bloemfontein according to Mvambi. One patient was transported to the Winburg Hospital.
“Jaws of life had to be used to extricate the injured and the deceased. The Free State MECs for Health, Monyatso Mahlatsi and Jabu Mbalula of Community Safety, Roads and Transport rushed to the scene of the accident and expressed shock at what they saw.” Said Mvambi.
“Road accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the Free State. The deaths and injuries resulting from these accidents places an extra burden on the already overwhelmed health services” said MEC Mahlatsi.
“Families lose their loved ones in road fatalities and our country suffers from irrecoverable economic effects. As the province is located at the heart of the country, we call upon all road users to play their part in ensuring that our roads are the safest contributors to the development of our province and the country as a whole. Arrive alive” concluded MEC Mbalula.
