According to Refiloe, before designing a successful winter fashion, you need to consider warmth, functionality, and style, including choosing the right fabric while sticking to the latest trends.
A winter fabric has to keep you warm, feel pleasantly soft on the skin, and has to have a cosy look. She advises fashion lovers to choose leather as it’s perfect to be used for layering, followed by fleece, cotton, fur, velvet, and wool.
For professional winter attire, prioritize layering for warmth and versatility, go for thermals, long-sleeve tops, or moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or silk to stay warm and dry. Add sweaters, cardigans, or vests for extra warmth and style. Choose a blazer, wool coat, or trench coat for a polished, professional look.
“ For the Winter 2025/2026 season, fashion trends are leaning towards rich, bold colours and textures, with a focus on jewel tones and luxurious fabrics. Expect to see plenty of burgundy, emerald green, sapphire blue, and deep amethyst, as well as earthy neutrals like olive green, warm beige tones, and chocolate brown,” said Refiloe.

To create a winter collection that works both indoors and out, Refiloe says you should focus on layering, using breathable fabrics. This allows you to adjust your outfit as needed, from the cold outdoor air to the warmer indoor environment.
She overcame challenges she faced by trusting herself and being authentic at all times.
“Designing a winter collection presents unique challenges for fashion designers” Said Refiloe.
