Asah Productions in collaboration with MyArts International is bringing Obeah Opera in Bloemfontein.
This will be the first time for Pacofs to host a Canadian original opera featuring a talented ensemble of performers including South Africa’s very own TuNokwe, dedicated to bringing this extraordinary story to life. The production team aims to deliver a high-quality, unforgettable experience that celebrates cultural diversity and female empowerment.
Obeah Opera, the hand-clapping, foot-stomping, spirit-lifting, magical musical sensation will premiere in South Africa this August in celebration of Women’s Month. The opera production will tour the Soweto Theatre, the Performing Arts Centre Of The Free State (PACOFS), and the South Africa State Theatre.
Obeah Opera is a groundbreaking musical that redefines the narrative of the historically famous 1692 Salem witch trials in America from the perspective of Caribbean enslaved women.
Written and composed by Nicole Brooks, this all-female acappella production fuses rich harmonies and rhythmic complexity, creating a mesmerizing and deeply moving experience.

Organizers said the audiences can look forward to a captivating performance that transcends traditional opera, moving away from its European classical standard and using an array of different musical genres mainly found in what is termed ‘Black’ music such as spirituals, blues, jazz, gospel, traditional African, Caribbean Folk, Calypso, ska, R&B, and reggae.
“I consider South Africa my spiritual home, and we are incredibly excited to bring Obeah Opera to South Africa, especially during Women’s Month, this is a dream come true. This opera is not just a performance; it’s a celebration of women’s strength and spirit,” said Nicole Brooks, creator of Obeah Opera.
“It is important to note that the initial plan was to include a local Free-state cast of about 6 to 8 women in this tour and give young women a chance to also explore new opportunities and international stages. Unfortunately, our talks with the Free-State Arts and Culture did not bear any fruits.” Said Denis Ackulay, Chief Director of MyArts International.
He added “We are however committed to hosting a capacity-building workshop during the tour in Bloemfontein that will either focus on the film development with Nicole Brooks or the International Theatre Market”
Tickets for the Obeah Opera International Premiere Tour will be available for purchase starting from mid June 2024. For more information on performance dates, venues, and ticket sales, visit PACOFS website www.pacofs.co.za.
