11 illegal immigrants arrested in Phuthaditjhaba

Eleven illegal immigrants were arrested and detained at the Phuthaditjhaba Police Station inthe Free Free State. They were arrested following an operation held jointly by Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality, the SAPS, SANDF, the Department of Home Affairs’ Immigration Services, the Department of Employment and Labour, and the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality.

The operation held on Friday 9 February was aimed at combating the selling of counterfeit, expired and rotten goods,  ownership of shops by illegal immigrants, hiring of illegal immigrants as labourers and illegal electricity connections.

Seven metre boxes were scrutinized and five were found to be legally connected while two were cut off for illegal connection and their owners were fined and has to pay before being reconnected.

The labour department did inspection were seven people were found to be non-compliant on the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA).

 Expired  and rotten food including alcohol were confiscated, the kitchens were food was prepared was found to be unhygienic  filled with cockroaches and kittens all over the place.

Non compliant shops were discovered by the Maluti A Phofung Fire Department and they did not have serviced fire extinguishers and adequate ventilation. The police raided six restaurants where they found expired food, amongst that was confiscated by the police was rotten French polony, Russians, and grand-pa headache tablets.

Maluti A Phofung closed four businesses on the spot for operating illegally and hiring undocumented foreign nationals. The operation will continue on a regular basis and will include the SA Revenue Services (SARS)
