They say a dog is a man’s best friend, and this rings especially true for Teboho Justice Thokoa, a dog trainer based in Botshabelo with over five years of experience in the field.
Teboho honed his skills at Braveheart Bio-Dog Academy in Cullinan, Pretoria, learning techniques for obedience, scent work, protection, and tracking. He also enjoys teaching dogs fun tricks like “high fives” and “rollovers.” His work has taken him across Gauteng, Northern Cape, and the Free State, where he has made a name for himself.
His journey began as a security officer, where he had the opportunity to work alongside trained dogs. This experience ignited his fascination with their intelligence and potential. Teboho recalled the moment he first witnessed a working dog in action, sparking his curiosity about how these animals perform such incredible tasks. This curiosity paved the way for his career in dog training.
The bond between humans and dogs deeply inspires Teboho. He admires how dogs can protect, detect danger, serve, and provide comfort. Witnessing trained dogs demonstrate focus and loyalty only further fueled his passion for shaping that connection.
For over five years, he has been training dogs in obedience, scent work, protection, and tracking. Teboho is committed to ongoing research and learning from his peers to enhance his skills.
When training, he focuses on each dog’s temperament, responsiveness, and building trust. He believes every dog has a unique personality, and he learns something new with each training session. Key factors in his training approach include consistency, patience, and clarity.
“I train dogs to obey, protect, detect substances, and track scents, but also to be social and well-behaved members of their families or working environments. The results are priceless,” Teboho explained. He emphasizes that dog training is all about communication, understanding canine psychology and behavior, and guiding them through structured routines that foster trust, discipline, and purpose.
Currently, Teboho is working towards establishing his own dog training academy, named “Dognificent Training Academy,” to share his passion and knowledge with others and continue fostering the incredible bond between humans and dogs.
