As part of Mandela Month celebrations, Free State Premier Maqueen revisited Pelonomi Hospital to assess improvements following her last visit. Her inspection aimed to ensure that previously identified issues, such as faulty plumbing and inadequate toilet facilities, had been addressed.

During her tour, Premier Maqueen observed significant progress. Many of the previously malfunctioning toilets were now operational. One patient confirmed this improvement, expressing gratitude to the Premier and noting that even toilet paper was now provided. “We are thankful to the Premier for her efforts. The facilities are much better now,” the patient said.

Despite these improvements, Premier Maqueen expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital staff’s treatment of patients. She witnessed staff members neglecting their duties, with one being directly rude to her during the visit. Additionally, she observed a staff member socializing with a friend during work hours and instructed the friend to leave the premises.

In an interview following the visit, Premier Maqueen emphasized her commitment to quality public services. “We will no longer tolerate contractors who leave work unfinished. Our citizens deserve better,” she stated. She also highlighted the importance of Mandela Month, urging continued efforts to improve public services in honor of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

Premier Maqueen’s visit underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare facilities and services in the Free State, reflecting the spirit of Mandela Month through tangible improvements and a focus on accountability.
